Why Representation Matters in Children's Colouring Books

As a mother, hairstylist/creative, I understand how important it is for children to see themselves reflected in the books, toys and media they interact with every day.

Growing up, it wasn't always easy to find colouring books featuring children with afros, braids, locs and other natural hairstyles. Yet representation plays a huge role in helping children build confidence, self-esteem and a positive sense of identity.

That is one of the reasons I created my colouring book.

Why Representation Matters

Children naturally look for characters they can relate to. When they see children who look like them, wear similar hairstyles or come from similar backgrounds, it helps them feel seen and valued.

For Black children, seeing natural hairstyles such as afros, braids, twists and locs represented positively can help build confidence and encourage self love from a young age.

Representation isn't just about appearance. It's about creating opportunities for children to feel included, celebrated and inspired.

The Benefits of Colouring Books

Colouring books offer much more than entertainment.

They can help children:

  • Develop creativity and imagination

  • Improve fine motor skills

  • Encourage focus and concentration

  • Express themselves through colour and art

  • Enjoy screen free activities

  • Build confidence through completing creative projects

Colouring can also be a relaxing activity that parents and children enjoy together.
